First Swing Learn to Golf Clinic
Don't miss First Swing Learn to Golf Clinic, featuring Iowa Veterans at Derby Grange Golf Center in Dubuque on May 7, from 9 am to noon.
FREE Adaptive Golf instruction for anyone with a physical challenge! Lunch and open golf in the afternoon are all part of the one day event, but you must attend the morning session to take advantage of the free open golf in the afternoon.
National Amputee Golf Association First Swing instructors, Dan Cox and Don Zommer will both be on hand to help introduce or re-introduce participants to the game of golf. If you have your own golf clubs, please bring them. Clubs will be available for you to use, including specialty clubs to improve your game!
Our Iowa Veterans are our featured guests for the day. All are welcome! You do not have to be a veteran to attend. For more information and to register, email robin@OPAFonline.org.

American Prosthetics & Orthotics (APO) welcomed four residents to the team recently. Theresa Bonnema, C.Ped, CFo, is completing her prosthetic residency at the Iowa City Hospital office. Matt Husnik, CO, ATC, is working to add certified prosthetist to his credentials, completing his residency requirements at the Iowa City Hospital office. Evan Ross also joined the Iowa City Hospital office as an orthotic resident. All three completed the prosthetics and orthotics programs at Chicago's Northwestern University Prosthetic-Orthotic Center. Prosthetic resident Kelvin Lee is a resident at APO’s Davenport office and completed the Prosthetic Practitioner program at Century College in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
Each is continuing his or her studies in the profession while having the opportunity to create patient relationships and gaining hands-on experience during residency.
The staff of American Prosthetics & Orthotics bids a fond farewell to our long-time orthotist and Iowa City office manager, Tom Ham, CO, who retired this fall. Tom is a consummate professional and has earned the respect and admiration of the entire APO team. He will be greatly missed by staff and patients alike. Tom leaves APO a legacy of finding solutions for challenging cases, guiding residents and serving as a resource to staff and physicians for technical or application issues. We all wish him the very best!
APO SPONSORS IOWA CITY AMPUTEE SUPPORT GROUP
The recently-formed Southeastern Iowa Amputee Support Group, sponsored by APO, is the only known group of its kind in the state, outside of Davenport. Founded by amputees Abbey Almelien and Harry Olmstead, both of Iowa City, the group meets at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of every month at Access 2 Independence, 381 E. College St., Iowa City.
The support group is open to anyone with limb loss, along with family members, caretakers and professionals. Almelien, who lost her right leg and hip to cancer in September 2008 and Olmstead, whose right leg was amputated in 2002 after suffering a staph infection post-knee replacement surgery, are both trained as Certified Peer Visitors through the Amputee Coalition of America.
